How to Spot a Fake or Low-Quality Refurbished Phone

Six warning signs that a 'refurbished' phone isn't the bargain it claims to be.

By James Holloway Technical Editor6 min read

Not all refurbished phones are genuine. Some sellers cut corners or sell counterfeit devices. Here's how to spot warning signs and protect yourself.

Red flag 1: No clear returns policy

Reputable sellers publish detailed returns policies. If a seller hides this information, walk away.

Red flag 2: No warranty

Any refurbished phone without a warranty isn't truly refurbished — it's just used.

Red flag 3: Prices too good to be true

If pricing is dramatically below market average, the phone may be counterfeit, stolen or seriously defective.

Red flag 4: No grading system

Quality refurbishers grade phones (Pristine, Excellent, Good, Fair). No grading often means no inspection.

Red flag 5: Vague seller information

Check for clear company information, like our about page and contact details.

Red flag 6: Counterfeit indicators

Misspellings, blurry logos, suspicious serial numbers or non-standard cables suggest a fake.

How to verify authenticity

Check the IMEI on Apple's or Samsung's website. Verify against the box and About screen.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trust marketplace sellers?

Established refurbishers with clear policies and reviews are far safer than anonymous sellers.

How do I check an IMEI?

Dial *#06# on the phone and compare against the manufacturer's online checker.
