Refurbished Phone Grading Explained: Pristine, Excellent, Good and Fair

All four grades work the same — the difference is purely cosmetic. Here's how to choose the right one and save the most money.

By Eleanor Wright Senior Editor, Mobile6 min read

Refurbished phone grades can be confusing, especially when different sellers use different terminology. Understanding what each grade actually means helps you choose the right balance between price and condition for your needs.

Pristine / Like New

Pristine-grade phones look essentially brand new. There are no visible marks, scratches or signs of use. The screen, frame and back are flawless. These are typically the most expensive refurbished phones.

Excellent

Excellent-grade phones may have very minor marks visible only under close inspection. They show no major scratches, dents or screen damage and are an excellent compromise between price and appearance.

Good

Good-grade phones have visible signs of use — light scratches on the frame, possibly a few minor marks on the screen — but function perfectly. Best for buyers who prioritise saving money over cosmetics.

Fair

Fair-grade phones show heavier wear, including scratches, scuffs or minor dents. The screen will still work flawlessly. These represent the cheapest refurbished options.

How to choose the right grade

If you'll be using a case and screen protector, a Good or Fair grade phone is excellent value. If you want something that looks new, opt for Pristine. Read our condition buying guide for more help.

Frequently asked questions

Do all grades come with the same warranty?

Yes — every grade includes a full warranty regardless of cosmetic condition.

Will a Fair-grade phone work as well as Pristine?

Yes. Functionally, all grades perform identically. Grading reflects appearance only.
