Refurbished Phone vs SIM-Free Phone: What Is the Difference?

The terms get confused all the time, but they describe completely different things. Here's the truth.

By Eleanor Wright Senior Editor, Mobile5 min read

Refurbished and SIM-free aren't the same thing — although the terms are often confused. Understanding the difference helps you make smarter decisions.

What is a SIM-free phone?

SIM-free means the phone is sold without a network contract or SIM card. It can be brand new or refurbished, and is unlocked to all networks.

What is a refurbished phone?

Refurbished refers to the condition — a previously owned phone that has been restored, tested and certified. It can be SIM-free or locked to a network.

Can a phone be both?

Yes — and most refurbished phones we sell are both refurbished AND SIM-free. See our full refurbished collection.

Buying SIM-free refurbished

This is the best of both worlds: low cost, free choice of network, and a tested device with a warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Is SIM-free the same as unlocked?

Practically, yes — SIM-free phones are unlocked to all networks.

Do SIM-free phones come with a SIM?

No — you bring your own SIM from any UK network.
